Remembering Jan: A Tribute by Nina Martinez
I was deeply saddened to hear that the world has lost one of the most genuine and inspiring people I have had the privilege to know, work alongside, and call my friend.
I first met Jan on 23rd September 2014, at the 21st birthday celebration of Bag Books. At the time, I was a freelance storyteller delivering sessions at her school, Michael Tippett School. As headteacher, Jan had already led her students, staff, and parents through a huge transition in 2008, when Michael Tippett became the first special educational needs school in the country—and the first school in London—to be completely rebuilt under the Building Schools for the Future programme.
That day, Jan kindly gave me a quick tour before my storytelling session and, ever thoughtful, checked in with me at the end of the day to ensure everything had gone well. That evening, with a glass of wine in hand at the Bag Books event, I began to truly understand her unwavering dedication and passion for enhancing the lives of those with profound and severe disabilities, as well as her deep commitment to supporting their families.
In 2016, Jan played a key role on the panel for my interview for the role of Storytelling Manager. After I had delivered my storytelling demonstration, we moved on to questions. Now, bearing in mind I had been freelancing with Bag Books for nearly a decade, my answer to one particular question might not have been the most conventional. Jan’s unmistakable smile and playful eye-roll in response is a moment I will never forget.
Over the years, I came to fully appreciate Jan’s professional contributions and was thrilled when she agreed to take on the role of Chair of Trustees. Her tireless commitment to the role was felt and appreciated by all of us at Bag Books. Jan brought a welcoming, hands-on approach, always eager to offer her support. At any opportunity, she would join our Storytelling and Build a Book sessions. And if those sessions happened to be at Arsenal Football Club—her team—it was simply a matter of sending her the time and date; she would be there, sleeves rolled up, ready to help.
Away from Bag Books, Jan and I shared a unique connection as parents. Our shared experiences led to moments of laughter, the occasional rant, and stories that others may not have quite understood.
Jan was a woman of immense warmth, kindness, and generosity, with an unyielding belief in Bag Books and everything we strive to achieve. Her passion, dedication, and spirit will forever remain part of our work.
On behalf of everyone at Bag Books, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jan’s family. Jan was not only our Chair of Trustees but also a cherished friend, mentor, and advocate. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire us every day.
Jan, you will always be a part of the Bag Books family. Thank you for everything.
A Personal Note from Our CEO, Lucy Barrett
Becoming CEO just before a global pandemic was not something anyone can ever plan or prepare for, and it was during this time that Jan’s support became truly invaluable. She was always there to offer guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear, helping me navigate challenges I could never have anticipated.
More than a wonderful mentor, Jan became a good friend—someone whose warmth, kindness, and unwavering belief in both me and Bag Books were constants. Her loss will be deeply felt, both professionally and personally, and I will miss her immensely.
We will carry forward her passion and dedication in everything we do.
